Hill of Tara
Just 10 minutes drive south of Navan off the N3 you will find the Hill of Tara where Irish myth, legend and history meet. This heritage site has been home to gods and goddesses, to druids and warriors and to Ireland's ancient High Kings who ruled all of Ireland from this magical mythical place.
Bective Abbey
Located 10 minutes drive west of Navan off the R161 is the remains of the second Cistercian Monastery founded in Ireland. View of Bective Abbey
King John's Castle
Commonly known as Trim Castle is the largest remaining Anglo-Norman castle in Europe. Built by Hugh de Lacy in 1173. Located in the designated Heritage town of Trim, 15 minutes drive west of Navan on the R161
Kells Town
Kells or Ceanannas Mór located 15 minutes drive north of Navan on the N3 is also an officially designated Irish Heritage Town. It is also home to the finest examples of monastic settlements to be found in Ireland. The Kells Heritage Centre is a must to visit where you can also see the Market Cross which is a 9th Century High Cross that would originally been located at the gate of the Kells Monastery.
Loughcrew Cairns
Located 40 minutes drive from Navan, east of Oldcastle off the R163 is possibly the oldest cemetery in the world. Loughcrew Cairns form the largest complex of Passage Graves in Ireland. The Cairns are megalithic structures containing symbolic engravings. Like other passage graves in Ireland, they have clear astrological alignments.
Slane Castle
Located 15 minutes north east of Navan on the N51 is the ancient village of Slane and Slane Castle, one of Ireland's most important stately homes, it has been the home of the Conngham family for over 300 years. There is also the Hill of Slane where legend has it that St. Patrick (Ireland's Patron Saint) lit the paschal fire to celebrate the feast of Easter in the year 433 AD and ignited the flame of Christianity in Ireland.
Brú na Bóinne - Newgrange
Located 15 minutes drive from Navan is the world's best known collection of Neolithic tombs which have been designated a world heritage site by UNESCO. Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre contains exhibitions that describe the society, that created the Neolithic tombs, how they were built, the meaning of the megalithic art and the solar alignments in the Boyne Valley.View of Newgrange
Battle of the Boyne Site
Located 20 minutes drive from Navan off the N51 is the site of the Battle of the Boyne. This was a battle of European significance fought on Irish soil. The defeat of the Catholic King James II of England by the Protestant King William of Orange affected the political shape of Europe, the British Throne and Protestant power in Ireland.
In addition there is golf, fishing or try an excursion on a canal barge, enjoy beautiful scenic walks along the banks on the famous river Boyne, hot air ballooning or just laze on a beach making sandcastles worthy of any high King.
